U.S. Embassy in Abuja Temporarily Closes Over Protest Concerns, Reschedules Visa Appointments

The United States Mission in Nigeria has temporarily closed its embassy in Abuja due to concerns over possible protests in the area, leading to the suspension of routine services and the rescheduling of several appointments.

The announcement was made through an official notice shared on the mission’s verified social media platform on Thursday. According to the statement, the embassy will remain closed for routine operations until Monday, March 9, 2026, as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.

In the notice, the mission explained that the decision was taken because of the potential for demonstrations within the Federal Capital Territory. As a result, all non-emergency services at the embassy have been temporarily halted.

The closure has affected a number of previously scheduled appointments, particularly those related to visa applications and American Citizen Services (ACS). The embassy confirmed that visa appointments originally planned for March 4 and March 5, as well as ACS appointments scheduled for March 5, have been postponed.

Affected applicants have been advised to check their email addresses or their AVITS accounts for updated appointment dates. The mission noted that new schedules have already been arranged for most applicants and will take place sometime next week.

For American citizens who had appointments with the embassy’s consular services, the mission stated that updated appointment details would also be communicated directly through email notifications.

The embassy further advised visa applicants who do not receive a new appointment notification to seek assistance through the Visa Navigator platform, which provides support and guidance for applicants navigating the visa process.

In addition, members of the public were encouraged to regularly monitor the embassy’s official website and social media platforms for further announcements or changes regarding the situation.

While no specific protest group was mentioned in the notice, the embassy emphasized that the temporary closure is a precautionary step aimed at maintaining security and minimizing potential disruptions.

Embassies and diplomatic missions often adopt such measures when there are security concerns or planned demonstrations nearby, as part of standard safety protocols designed to protect both staff members and visitors.

The U.S. Mission reassured the public that routine services will resume once it is deemed safe to reopen the embassy, urging applicants to remain patient and stay informed through official communication channels for the latest updates.
