Alex Pereira Targets Historic Third UFC Title at White House Event

Brazilian mixed martial artist Alex Pereira is set to pursue a historic milestone as he prepares to fight for the interim heavyweight championship against France’s Ciryl Gane at a special UFC event scheduled for 14 June at the White House in Washington, D.C.

The event, titled UFC Freedom 250, was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump as part of celebrations marking 250 years of American independence. If victorious, Pereira would become the first fighter in UFC history to win championship titles in three different weight divisions.

Pereira’s Bid for History

Pereira, a former UFC middleweight champion who later captured the light-heavyweight title, vacated his light-heavyweight belt last month to move up to the heavyweight division in pursuit of a third championship. Currently ranked fifth in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings, the Brazilian fighter is aiming to further cement his legacy in the sport.

His opponent, Gane, last competed in October against undisputed heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. That bout ended in a no contest after Aspinall suffered accidental eye pokes that later required surgery on both eyes. The winner of the Pereira–Gane fight is expected to face Aspinall in a unification bout once the British champion returns to competition, though no timeline for his comeback has been confirmed.

Historic UFC Event at the White House

The Pereira vs. Gane bout will take place on the South Lawn of the White House and serve as the co-main event of a six-fight card. The main event will feature a lightweight title unification fight between champion Ilia Topuria and interim champion Justin Gaethje.

Topuria, who represents both Spain and Georgia, has not fought since June due to personal issues following his divorce. Meanwhile, Gaethje secured the interim lightweight belt in January with a victory over Britain’s Paddy Pimblett.

While the White House has previously hosted recreational sporting activities, the UFC event will be the first professional live sporting competition ever staged on its grounds. The promotion plans to spend approximately $60 million (£44.3 million) to produce the event.

UFC president Dana White expects about 5,000 spectators to attend the event on the South Lawn. Additionally, around 85,000 fans are expected to watch from a nearby public area known as the Ellipse. Tickets for the South Lawn will not be publicly sold, with approximately 1,000 seats reserved for members of the U.S. military.

Sport, Politics, and the UFC

The decision to host a UFC event at the White House reflects the long-standing relationship between Dana White and Donald Trump. In the early 2000s, Trump hosted several UFC events at the former Trump Taj Mahal, helping the organization gain exposure during its early years.

Over time, the relationship between Trump and the UFC leadership strengthened. Trump has frequently attended UFC events as a guest of honor, while White publicly supported Trump during the 2024 presidential election campaign.

This close association has increasingly blurred the line between sport and politics. For Trump, appearing alongside the UFC brand—often associated with themes of strength, patriotism, and toughness—resonates strongly with many of his supporters. For the UFC, Trump’s global platform provides valuable exposure for the sport and its athletes.

The partnership also comes at a time when the UFC faces scrutiny over its business practices. In 2025, the organization paid out approximately £281 million to settle a lawsuit from former fighters and is currently facing additional legal challenges.

As a result, UFC Freedom 250 is seen as more than just a sporting spectacle. It represents a highly symbolic event celebrating both American independence and the evolving relationship between the UFC and the U.S. political establishment.
