South Africa Stumble in Chase of 154 Against Zimbabwe in T20 World Cup Super 8 Clash

South Africa slipped to 101-5 while pursuing a target of 154 against Zimbabwe in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super 8 encounter, as Zimbabwe mounted a spirited bowling performance to keep the contest alive.

Zimbabwe, already eliminated from the tournament, won the toss and elected to bat first. They posted a competitive 153-7 from their 20 overs, anchored by a commanding 73 from captain Sikandar Raza. South Africa’s bowling effort was led by the impressive Kwena Maphaka, who returned figures of 2-21.

South Africa, having already secured qualification for the semi-finals, entered the match knowing that victory would confirm top spot in Group 1 and set up a last-four meeting with New Zealand rather than England.

Zimbabwe Set Competitive Total

After choosing to bat, Zimbabwe built their innings around Raza’s fluent knock. His 73 provided stability and momentum, guiding his side to a defendable total despite disciplined spells from South Africa’s attack.

Though Zimbabwe are out of contention for the knockout stages, their performance reflected determination and resilience on the global stage.

South Africa’s Chase Falters

In response, South Africa’s innings showed flashes of dominance but was punctuated by crucial setbacks. Aggressive stroke play from Dewald Brevis injected momentum into the chase, including several towering sixes. However, Brevis fell for 42, attempting an ambitious shot off Raza, only to be caught in the deep by Ryan Burl.

The dismissal shifted momentum back toward Zimbabwe, with Raza celebrating a pivotal breakthrough as his variations troubled the South African middle order.

David Miller also contributed with a brisk 22, striking elegant boundaries before edging a delivery from Blessing Muzarabani to short third man, where Dion Myers completed the catch.

Raza capped an influential spell with figures of 3-29, underlining his all-round impact on the contest. At 121-5 after 13.2 overs, South Africa required 33 runs from 6.4 overs, with five wickets in hand.

Match Situation

With experienced players at the crease and wickets remaining, South Africa remain favourites to complete the chase. However, Zimbabwe’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding have ensured that the outcome is far from certain.

The result will determine South Africa’s semi-final opponent as the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup reaches its decisive phase.
