The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has issued a warning to the public, particularly traders, about the ongoing fraudulent activities related to the Kejetia Market Phase Two project. The Assembly's warning follows reports that individuals, claiming to have the authority to allocate shops in the upcoming market phase, have been collecting money from unsuspecting traders.
In an interview on Friday, February 27, 2026, Mayor Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi urged caution, stressing that no official entity had been authorized to collect payments for shop allocations. He revealed that “faceless individuals” had been soliciting payments with promises of securing spaces in the new development. This practice has persisted despite the project's still-unfinished status.
Background of the Kejetia Market# Redevelopment
The Kejetia Market redevelopment, which includes a second phase initiated by former President Nana Akufo-Addo on May 2, 2019, has been a significant infrastructure project in Kumasi. However, the project has faced delays, with work on the second phase halted in 2024. This has created an opportunity for fraudsters to exploit traders eager to secure retail spaces.
Mayor Boadi emphasized that these fraudulent activities were first reported in January 2026 and have been continuously monitored by the KMA. He further clarified that no official payment structure or pricing had been established for the allocation of shops in the second phase of the redevelopment.
No Official Payments Accepted
The KMA has assured the public that no payments are being collected for the shops at this time. Boadi made it clear that any money handed over to unauthorized individuals for shop allocations is done at the individual's own risk. He also noted that once the project is completed and ready for shop allocation, the KMA will provide the public with official information regarding the payment process, including the amount to be paid and the procedures to follow.
“It must be noted that no decision has been made regarding the payment for shop allocations,” Mayor Boadi stated. “When the project reaches completion, all details related to the allocation and payment process will be communicated publicly.”

The KMA has urged traders and other interested parties to stay alert and rely solely on official announcements from the Assembly.
