Energy Ministry Defends Jinapor Against Unfounded Resignation Demands
The Ministry of Energy has hit back at calls for the resignation of its Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, labeling them as politically driven and unjustified. These demands, made by the Minority in Parliament on April 28, came in response to recent power outages affecting some parts of Ghana.
According to the Minority, the power interruptions are a sign of the Minister’s leadership failure in managing the nation’s energy sector. However, the Ministry strongly rejected these claims, emphasizing that significant strides have been made in improving the country's energy supply and addressing long-standing issues inherited from previous administrations.
In an interview with Citi News, Ministry spokesperson Richmond Rockson defended Minister Jinapor, highlighting key achievements under his leadership. Rockson pointed to the government’s efforts to boost generation capacity, maintain a stable electricity supply for over a year, and resolve the sector’s financial challenges.
“For a Minister who has kept the lights on for 12 months without load shedding, is he truly a failure? This is someone who has made critical debt payments and secured more projects to keep the energy sector afloat,” Rockson said, referring to the $1.47 billion payment made by the government to utility companies.
Rockson urged the public to focus on industry perspectives rather than political narratives. “Listen to what the industry is saying about Dr. Jinapor,” he added, pointing out the significant progress made despite the challenges.
The debate surrounding the energy sector continues as the government pushes forward with its plans to stabilize and improve the country’s energy supply.
