A man accused of opening fire inside a hotel hosting the prestigious White House Correspondents' Dinner has been identified by law enforcement sources as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen.
The suspect, reportedly from Torrance, California, was arrested on Saturday night after gunshots were heard inside the Washington Hilton, where the high-profile event was taking place.
According to sources cited by CBS, Allen allegedly told authorities he intended to target officials within the Trump administration. Reports indicate that between five and eight shots may have been fired during the incident, though officials have not confirmed an exact number.
Police say security personnel engaged the suspect in an exchange of gunfire before he was apprehended. Despite the confrontation, authorities confirmed that the suspect was not struck and was later transported to a hospital for evaluation.
Washington’s interim police chief stated that Allen appeared to be acting alone and was heavily armed at the time of the incident. Authorities recovered a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives from him.
Footage shared by Donald Trump shows a man rushing past security before being pursued by officers. A separate image posted later depicts the suspect shirtless on the ground, restrained with handcuffs and surrounded by Secret Service agents.
Further developments reveal that FBI agents conducted a search at a property in California believed to be linked to the suspect. Investigators also confirmed that Allen had been associated with a tutoring company in Torrance and had previously received a “Teacher of the Month” award in late 2024.
Additionally, the California Institute of Technology confirmed that Allen graduated from the institution in 2017.
Authorities say the suspect is now facing multiple federal charges, including using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting federal officers with a dangerous weapon. He is expected to appear in federal court on Monday.
