Beginning in December, the United States will implement automatic enrollment for eligible men into the military draft system, marking a significant shift from the long-standing self-registration process. The change is designed to streamline operations and reduce administrative costs by transferring responsibility from individuals to the government.
The Selective Service System (SSS), which maintains a database of individuals who could be called upon during a national emergency, submitted the proposed rule for review on March 30. Under the new policy—mandated by the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act—men aged 18 to 25 will be registered automatically, typically within 30 days of turning 18, using integrated federal data systems.
