The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has firmly defended the decision to award the Damang Mines contract to Engineers and Planners, stressing that the choice was based on proven experience and solid financial backing—not experimentation.
Speaking on Newsfile on Joy Prime, he made it clear that mining is a high-stakes industry that cannot afford trial-and-error approaches.
“Mining is not a place for experiments. It is not where you go and say you are learning on the job,” he stated emphatically.
According to him, Engineers and Planners bring nearly three decades of contract mining experience to the table—an advantage he says cannot be overlooked.
“Nobody in this country would deny the experience of Engineers and Planners,” he added.
Beyond experience, Edudzi also highlighted the company’s strong financial capacity. He revealed that two major banks in Ghana are prepared to support the deal through a syndicated financing arrangement—an indication of confidence in the project.
He further referenced communication from Gold Fields, noting that the selected contractor’s familiarity with the Damang site played a crucial role in the decision.

“The incumbent contractor is well experienced in the operating conditions at the mine,” he explained.
Edudzi argued that ignoring such expertise would have been a costly mistake.
“It would have been negligence to ignore experience for learning on the job,” he concluded.
The statement comes amid growing public interest in the Damang Mines contract, with many closely watching how the decision will impact Ghana’s mining sector.
