Doncic’s 38 Powers Lakers Past Clippers in Thrilling Crosstown Showdown

The Los Angeles Lakers edged the Los Angeles Clippers 125–122 on Friday night at Crypto.com Arena, earning a hard-fought victory to split the season series between the longtime rivals.

Luka Doncic delivered a standout performance, finishing with 38 points and 11 assists to lead the Lakers. The All-Star guard took control in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 points in the final period to help his team withstand a late Clippers surge. Austin Reaves added 29 points in another impressive outing, while LeBron James contributed 13 points and 11 assists in his return from the All-Star break.

Despite building a 15-point lead in the second half, the Lakers were forced to fend off a determined comeback attempt from the Clippers. Los Angeles’ purple and gold contingent benefited from a rare moment of full health, as Doncic, James, and Reaves shared the court together for just the 11th time in 55 games this season. The trio’s offensive cohesion was evident, particularly during a blistering stretch in which the Lakers made 16 of 17 shots.

Doncic, playing in his first game after a four-game absence due to a mildly strained hamstring and a brief appearance in the NBA All-Star Game, wasted no time asserting himself. He poured in 17 points in the opening quarter, knocking down four 3-pointers and setting the tone for a high-scoring contest.

The Clippers, however, responded with resilience. Kawhi Leonard scored 31 points, including a dominant 19-point second quarter that kept his team within striking distance after a slow start. Leonard’s night ended prematurely when he exited with an apparent ankle injury with just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, dealing a significant blow to the Clippers’ comeback hopes.

Bennedict Mathurin continued his strong run of form, finishing with 26 points and seven rebounds before fouling out with 1:49 left. Acquired in a recent trade that sent center Ivica Zubac to Indiana, Mathurin has quickly made an impact with his scoring and athleticism.

Late in the game, Derrick Jones Jr. scored on consecutive possessions to trim the Lakers’ lead to 123–120 with 46 seconds remaining. Moments later, Nicolas Batum stole a pass from James, giving the Clippers a final opportunity to tie. However, Batum’s contested three-point attempt with four seconds left fell short, sealing the victory for the Lakers.

The Clippers also endured an injury scare earlier in the game when John Collins was helped off the court late in the first half after sustaining a facial injury on a hard fall while attempting to catch a pass near the rim.

With the win, the Lakers improved to 34–21, strengthening their position in the Western Conference standings. The Clippers, now 27–29, fell short of reaching the .500 mark after battling back from a difficult 6–21 start to the season.

Both teams return to action Sunday, with the Clippers hosting Orlando and the Lakers welcoming Boston, as the race toward the postseason intensification.
