Ministries Building in Cape Coast Declared a Death Trap

The Ministries Building in Cape Coast, home to various government offices, has become a major safety concern as it faces the threat of collapse. This building, which houses key institutions such as the Ghana Education Service, the Controller and Accountant General's Department, and the Complementary Education Division, is in desperate need of urgent repairs or demolition to protect the lives of those working there.

The structure has significantly deteriorated due to its age, with noticeable cracks, peeling walls, exposed old electrical cables, and persistent leakages. These issues, particularly when it rains, have left employees living in constant fear of an accident. Some departments, including the Ghana News Agency, Information Services, and Immigration Service, have already vacated the premises, citing the hazardous conditions.

Local residents and concerned stakeholders are now urging authorities to take swift action. They have called on the Central Regional Coordinating Council to relocate employees and initiate the construction of a new, modern office complex for the Ghana Education Service. This request is particularly urgent, as Cape Coast is regarded as a hub for education, and a stable, secure environment is critical for the quality of education delivery.

Staff members who continue to work in the building have expressed their deep concern over the situation, emphasizing the trauma they endure daily. They are pleading with the government to prioritize the redevelopment of the building and ensure the safety of workers who are currently at risk.

As the building continues to degrade, the call for immediate government intervention has grown louder, with many stressing that the safety of public servants must be a top priority.
