Sandro Tonali delivered a match-winning performance as Newcastle United came from behind to defeat 10-man Aston Villa in an enthralling FA Cup fourth-round encounter at Villa Park.
Newcastle overturned a contentious first-half deficit to advance to the next stage, in a fixture played without VAR assistance.
First-Half Drama
The hosts opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Tammy Abraham finished from close range after meeting a Douglas Luiz free-kick. Newcastle players appealed for offside in the build-up, but referee Chris Kavanagh allowed the goal to stand.
The visitors’ frustrations deepened when Lucas Digne handled Kieran Trippier’s cross inside the penalty area. Instead of awarding a penalty, the referee gave a free-kick just outside the box.
Villa’s momentum shifted just before halftime when goalkeeper Marco Bizot was shown a straight red card. The Dutchman raced out of his area and brought down Jacob Murphy with a high challenge, leaving the referee with little choice but to dismiss him.
Second-Half Comeback
With a numerical advantage after the interval, Newcastle seized control. In the 63rd minute, substitute goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez parried Trippier’s delivery from a free-kick into Tonali’s path. The midfielder’s long-range strike took a deflection and found the net to level the score.
Tonali struck again 13 minutes later, firing a powerful effort from distance beyond Martínez to complete the turnaround.
Nick Woltemade added a late third goal, ending his 14-match scoring drought on his 24th birthday and securing a comprehensive victory for Eddie Howe’s side.
The result sends Newcastle into the fifth round and strengthens their push for silverware this season.
