The Ministry of Health has announced that the Government of Ghana has approved the payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to nurses and midwives across the country.
In an official communiqué released on February 27, 2026, the Ministry confirmed that steps have been taken to settle the arrears in a structured and sustainable manner. The announcement follows extensive engagements between the Ministry and the Ministry of Finance to address the concerns of affected health workers.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Samuel Kofi disclosed that approval has been secured for the arrears to be paid in four instalments. According to him, the payments will commence in April and continue through July 2026. He emphasized that the phased arrangement reflects the government’s commitment to meeting its financial obligations responsibly while ensuring fiscal stability.
“This structured payment plan underscores the Government’s firm commitment to clearing all outstanding obligations in a timely, responsible, and sustainable manner,” Dr. Kofi stated.
The issue of unpaid salary arrears has been a significant concern among nurses and midwives in recent months, with many calling for swift intervention to resolve the delays. The government’s decision to approve and schedule payments is therefore expected to bring relief to affected personnel and help restore confidence within the health sector.
Dr. Kofi further commended nurses and midwives for their professionalism and dedication to duty despite the challenges posed by the delays. He acknowledged their continued commitment to delivering quality healthcare services to citizens across the country.
“We commend our health workers for their steadfast commitment to service delivery, even in the face of delays,” he said. “We also sincerely appreciate the Ministry of Finance for the priority attention and urgency given to this matter.”
The Ministry reiterated its assurance that the welfare of health workers remains a top priority and pledged to strengthen collaboration with relevant stakeholders to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The planned disbursement of the arrears marks a significant step toward resolving the matter and reinforcing the government’s commitment to supporting frontline healthcare professionals who play a critical role in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system.
