An American traveler has sparked widespread online debate after recounting what he described as a troubling experience while visiting Nigeria.

In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user AsakyGRN, the man alleged that he was repeatedly asked to give cash payments while entering and exiting the country. Expressing frustration, he questioned whether such demands were systemic.

In the video, he stated:

“Nigerians, is your entire country set up to extort people? Coming in and out of the airports, I was told ‘now you give me cash’ at least ten times. Many roads have police checkpoints, but are they really security checkpoints or just shakedown points?”

According to him, the issue extended beyond airport procedures. He claimed that several police checkpoints along major roads also demanded money under the guise of conducting routine security inspections.

The video quickly gained traction online, generating mixed reactions from Nigerians and other social media users. While some defended the country and maintained that not all security officials engage in such practices, others acknowledged that corruption and unofficial levies at checkpoints remain ongoing concerns.

One user commented, “This is sadly true, checkpoints everywhere just to extort people.” Another wrote, “We need proper accountability in security agencies.”

The viral clip has since ignited broader discussions about corruption, transparency, and the experiences of foreign visitors traveling within Nigeria.
