Atalanta head coach Raffaele Palladino has confirmed that Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman asked to leave the club during the January transfer window, a request that ultimately led to his late move to Atlético Madrid.
Speaking ahead of Atalanta’s Coppa Italia quarter-final clash with Juventus, Palladino explained that the decision was driven by the player’s desire for a new challenge, adding that the club chose to respect his wishes.
“Lookman received an offer towards the end of the transfer window. He asked to leave and wanted a change of environment, so the club decided to make him happy,” Palladino told Sport Mediaset. “We wish him all the best for the future.”
Focus Remains on Coppa Italia Campaign
Despite the high-profile departure, Palladino insisted that Atalanta remain fully focused on their Coppa Italia ambitions. The quarter-final tie against Juventus will be decided in a single match, with penalties to follow if the contest is level after 90 minutes.
“It is an important match for us because we care deeply about this competition and want to progress as far as possible,” Palladino said. “Our aim is to remain competitive until the end.”
The winner of the encounter will advance to the semi-finals, where they will face either Bologna or Lazio.
Praise for Juventus and Squad Confidence
Palladino also praised Juventus’ recent form, acknowledging the challenge posed by a resurgent opponent.
“This is a fascinating match against a strong team in excellent condition,” he added. “They play attractive football and are led by a very good coach. I always prefer to compete against the strongest teams.”
Atalanta have reshaped their squad during the January window, with Giacomo Raspadori arriving as Lookman departed. Palladino expressed confidence in the depth and quality of his current squad.
“I am very satisfied with the group at my disposal,” he said. “It is exactly what we needed to compete across three competitions. I am fortunate to have a strong and competitive squad with quality and technical ability.”
Departure Timing and Recent Setback
The coach revealed that the timing of Lookman’s transfer meant there was little opportunity for a formal farewell.
“We were travelling for an away match when he left, so there was not much time to say goodbye,” Palladino noted.
Atalanta head into the cup tie following a dramatic league draw with Como, a match in which they played most of the game with 10 men after Honest Ahanor received an early red card. Palladino confirmed the club would not discipline the young defender.
“We will not fine Ahanor,” he said. “He is young and understands his mistake. I appreciated the team’s reaction, as they fought hard to secure a positive result.”
