A Nigerian woman has ignited online discussions after sharing how her decision to decline purchasing a friend’s bridal asoebi negatively affected their relationship, despite her offering substantial financial support.
The woman recounted her experience on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that she was invited to join the bridal asoebi for her friend’s wedding. The fabric, she said, was priced at ₦100,000. She politely declined the offer, stating that she does not participate in buying bridal asoebi.
According to her account, she still attended the wedding and presented the bride with an envelope containing over ₦100,000 as a personal gift. At the event, the bride reportedly received the gesture warmly and expressed appreciation.
However, days after the wedding, the woman began hearing comments suggesting the bride was displeased with her. When she confronted her friend, the bride allegedly admitted that she felt hurt by her refusal to buy the asoebi, despite the cash gift.
The woman disclosed that the disagreement has since strained their friendship. She added that she has only worn asoebi on two occasions in her lifetime and did not pay for the outfits on either occasion.
Describing herself as traditional in outlook, she argued that bridal asoebi should be provided free of charge. She questioned when it became acceptable for brides to place such financial expectations on their friends and guests.
Her story has attracted mixed reactions across social media platforms. While many users supported her position and criticized the rising costs of weddings, others maintained that participating in asoebi is a show of loyalty and emotional support for the bride.
