Burkina Faso's interim leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has asserted that democracy is not a fundamental requirement for a nation's development, arguing that no country has truly advanced solely through democratic governance. His remarks were made during a recent flag-raising ceremony at the Koulouba Palace, where he emphasized that the concept of democracy is ill-suited to the current political realities of Burkina Faso.
“If we have to state it clearly, we are not living in a democracy; we are in the midst of a popular, progressive revolution,” Traoré declared. He further explained that Burkina Faso is undergoing a necessary revolutionary process, one in which the conventional ideas of democracy and unregulated freedom of expression have no place.
According to Traoré, what is often labeled as democracy only leads to chaos when individual freedoms are unchecked. "While one person may feel free to speak and act as they please, others also have the same freedom, which ultimately results in a disorderly society," he commented.
Traoré went on to assert that no nation has developed as a result of democracy, suggesting that democracy is not a driver of progress but rather a byproduct of development. “Democracy is the outcome of development, not the cause,” he argued.
Having assumed power after a military coup in September 2022, which ousted interim President Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, Traoré has positioned himself as a critic of Western governance models. Instead, he champions what he calls a “people-powered revolution” as the path forward for Burkina Faso.
His statements are expected to intensify the ideological rift between Burkina Faso’s transitional government and its Western allies, many of whom continue to advocate for a return to constitutional governance in the Sahel region.
