Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has openly criticized former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for attributing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 electoral defeat to external factors, rather than acknowledging his own role in the party’s performance.
Dr. Bawumia recently cited several reasons for the NPP’s loss, including the unfinished National Cathedral project and its associated expenditure of $58 million. He argued that such issues eroded public confidence and played a major role in the party’s defeat at the polls.
However, in a pointed social media response, Dr. Boamah refuted these claims, accusing the former Vice President of avoiding accountability. “Elections 2024: Bawumia is blaming everything & everybody EXCEPT HIMSELF. Bawumia was critical for NPP’s economic mess!” Boamah stated, taking direct aim at Bawumia’s handling of the economy.
The statement has reignited debate over Dr. Bawumia’s leadership of the Economic Management Team during the NPP’s time in office. Critics argue that the administration's economic policies significantly contributed to public dissatisfaction and the eventual electoral outcome.
As the post-election discourse continues, Dr. Boamah’s remarks reflect a broader call for accountability within the NPP, particularly from those who held key positions of economic oversight.
