Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt has stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is no longer the uncontested leader within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), signaling a notable shift in the party's internal dynamics following recent developments.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Pratt asserted that Dr. Bawumia, once seen as the NPP’s clear presidential frontrunner, now stands on equal footing with other potential contenders. “Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is no longer the candidate of the party. In fact, he is in the same position as all the others we hear want to be presidential candidates,” he said.
Pratt highlighted the evolving structure of party leadership, emphasizing that Mr. Stephen Ntim, the NPP’s National Chairman, currently holds the central leadership role. “The leader of the party now is Mr. Stephen Ntim. He has always been the leader during election periods. Even when the party is in government, he remains the leader,” Pratt explained.
His remarks suggest a strategic pivot for the NPP as it begins preparations for the 2028 elections. According to Pratt, the party should already be reorganizing and assessing its direction as it approaches the next electoral cycle.
“The party ought to be looking at election 2028,” he noted, implying that the leadership race remains open, and Dr. Bawumia will need to compete on a level playing field with other hopefuls.
