Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, leader of the Generational Rights Protection Society, has alleged that former President John Mahama’s administration is covertly supporting illegal mining activities under the pretense of formal regulation through the newly established GoldBod.
In an interview with Kwaku Dawuro on Movement TV, Mensah criticized the GoldBod initiative—spearheaded by NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi—as a veiled endorsement of illegal mining, commonly referred to as "galamsey," under the label of small-scale mining.
“He claims to be against galamsey, yet with the speed of Usain Bolt, he has set up what I call a 'galamsey board,' headed by Sammy Gyamfi, to purchase 12 tons of gold,” Mensah asserted.
He raised serious concerns about the source of the gold that the GoldBod is expected to acquire, pointing out contradictions in the government’s position.
“We asked if the gold is coming from legitimate sources like AngloGold Ashanti, Newmont, or Precious Minerals, and the answer was no. Instead, they plan to buy from small-scale miners. On paper, it looks legal, but in reality, much of it comes from illegal mining operations deep in the bush,” he stated.
Mensah argued that the creation of GoldBod effectively legitimizes and facilitates illegal mining, with Sammy Gyamfi allegedly at the center of this operation. He concluded by labeling the board as a strategic tool to promote environmentally damaging practices under a misleading regulatory framework.
