Investigation Underway into the Tragic Death of Constable John Kwabena Dogbetey

The Ghana Police Service has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of General Constable John Kwabena Dogbetey, who passed away on April 3, 2025, in Assin Dansame, located in the Central Region.

Preliminary reports indicate that Constable Dogbetey was part of an Anti-Galamsey Taskforce under the Assin Foso Police Division, deployed to the area to tackle illegal mining activities. While working to dismantle a chamfan machine used in these illegal operations, a gunshot was unexpectedly fired, striking and fatally injuring him.

Following the incident, his colleagues quickly transported him to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Foso, where he was later declared dead. A statement from the police confirmed that appropriate procedures have been initiated, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of his death.

The police have assured both the public and the grieving family that every effort will be made to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. “The Police Administration is in close contact with the deceased’s family, providing necessary support during this difficult time,” said ASPINA FRANCIS O. ONYINA, Public Affairs Director for the Central North Region.

To preserve critical evidence and facilitate a thorough inquiry, authorities have seized the firearm involved in the incident. In addition, the taskforce successfully dismantled several illegal mining machines, confiscated three excavators, and seized other mining equipment during the operation.

The Ghana Police Service remains committed to ensuring justice and clarity in this case.
