Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has shed light on internal tensions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing frustrations among staff over unpaid salaries and raising concerns about the current direction of party leadership.
During an appearance on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, as monitored by MyNewsGH, Pratt revealed that dissatisfaction is growing among workers stationed at the party's national headquarters.
"Yesterday, I read a newspaper report quoting some members of the party who expressed outrage over not receiving their salaries. These individuals are based at the headquarters, not the constituencies, and claim they haven’t been paid for a considerable period," he stated.
Pratt noted that some affected members had turned to social media to voice their grievances. "One of them even posted that although they are working without pay, the party has managed to fund a Thank You Tour. This, understandably, raised serious concerns."
Although Pratt refrained from speculating on the exact reasons behind the non-payment, he hinted at having insights he chose not to share publicly.
On the matter of party leadership, Pratt explained that there has been a shift in roles following the conclusion of the recent elections. He clarified that the party’s National Chairman, Mr. Stephen Ntim, now leads the NPP.
“Mr. Stephen Ntim is the leader of the party. He has traditionally played that role during elections, and even when the party is in government, he remains the leader,” Pratt explained.
He further emphasized that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s former presidential candidate, now stands on equal footing with others interested in contesting the 2028 elections. “Dr. Bawumia is no longer the candidate of the party. He now shares the same status as all other prospective presidential hopefuls,” Pratt remarked.
In conclusion, Pratt urged the NPP to shift its focus toward long-term strategic planning, suggesting that preparations for the 2028 general elections should be a priority.
