Prof. Kwesi Aning, Director of the Office for International Cooperation at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), has said that Burkina Faso’s deepening relationship with Russia should not raise alarm.
His remarks come amid growing discussions about the shift by Sahel countries—namely Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—away from their traditional Western partners, choosing instead to strengthen cooperation with Russia, particularly in the areas of security and economic development.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV with Bernard Avle, Prof. Aning stressed that Burkina Faso has the sovereign right to choose its international allies. He also pointed out what he described as double standards by some Western nations.
“Those criticizing Burkina Faso for engaging with Russia need to examine their own actions. Many of these same countries continue to do business with Russia despite the Ukraine conflict,” he said.
Prof. Aning noted that despite international sanctions, many Western companies maintain a presence in Russia, often operating through indirect means.
“They speak of sanctions, yet when you visit cities like Moscow, Western brands are still there, finding creative ways to keep selling their products,” he added.
He concluded by reaffirming that the decision to pursue any foreign alliance rests with Burkina Faso’s government.
“It is entirely up to the leadership of Burkina Faso to choose their allies. Frankly, I’m not bothered by outside criticism,” Prof. Aning stated.
