The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Adentan Municipal Assembly, Madam Ella Esiman Nongo, has confirmed the deaths of three individuals following devastating floods caused by heavy rainfall in Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
According to Madam Nongo, the victims were from separate locations within the Adentan Municipality. “We lost two people in Lakeside, a four-year-old girl in Nanakrom, and a gentleman in the New Legon area,” she said.
The downpour, which lasted nearly three hours, caused widespread flooding across the Greater Accra Region, impacting areas such as Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, and Tema. Many major roads were rendered impassable, vehicles were left stranded, and the critical Odaw drain in central Accra overflowed, unable to handle the volume of water.
Emergency response teams managed to rescue several residents trapped in the Ashiyie area. Despite the efforts, the MCE expressed deep concern over the persistent threat posed by flooding in low-lying and vulnerable communities.
“One of the major issues is unregulated construction on waterways. These illegal developments block proper drainage during rains,” she stated.
Madam Nongo called for stronger enforcement of building regulations and immediate interventions to address the underlying causes of the recurring floods in Adentan and the wider Accra area.
