A man alleged to have orchestrated an online scam involving iPhones advertised on Facebook was recently located and confronted by a group of victims in Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD), South Africa.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect had been offering Apple iPhones at seemingly attractive prices through Facebook Marketplace. Victims reported that after making full payments for the devices, the scammer ceased all communication and failed to deliver the promised products.
Determined to seek justice, a number of the defrauded individuals organized and successfully tracked down the suspect in the heart of the Johannesburg CBD. The confrontation escalated, resulting in the suspect being physically assaulted with a sjambok—a traditional South African whip—by some of the enraged victims.
Video footage of the incident, recorded by bystanders and victims, quickly spread across various social media platforms. The footage has sparked widespread debate online, with many expressing empathy for the victims’ frustrations, while others have condemned the use of violence, emphasizing the need for lawful resolution through proper legal channels.
As of now, local authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the incident or confirmed whether the suspect is in police custody.
This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unverified online transactions and highlights the importance of exercising due diligence when engaging in e-commerce through social media platforms.
