The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, has issued a stern warning to street traders operating illegally in the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra. Vendors who go beyond clearly marked boundaries will now face fines of up to GH₵2,000.
This announcement comes on the heels of a large-scale decongestion operation carried out on Tuesday, May 20, by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in partnership with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly. The joint effort targeted hawkers and traders occupying pedestrian walkways and obstructing traffic.
“We’re deploying a 24-hour task force. Red lines will be drawn, and any vendor who crosses them will be fined—starting at GH₵1,500 and rising to GH₵2,000,” Minister Ocloo stated.
She also highlighted plans to engage market leaders in the enforcement process, saying, “We’ll assign leaders in each market to help monitor and ensure that traders comply with the rules.”
The move is part of a wider government campaign to enhance sanitation, reduce congestion, and bring order back to Accra's busiest commercial zones.
