Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been granted bail with two sureties, following a police interrogation on Monday, May 26, 2025. The bail amount has not been disclosed.
Wontumi appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) days after police were unsuccessful in an attempt to arrest him on Friday, May 22. He was accompanied by Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame during the questioning.
The investigation centered on allegations linking Wontumi to illegal mining operations, locally known as galamsey. Addressing the media afterward, he strongly denied any involvement.
"I provided my license to prove I am not engaged in illegal mining," Wontumi stated. "There were also claims that I was operating in forest reserves, which I also denied. I challenged the authorities to produce any evidence."
Following the interrogation, Wontumi was granted bail, as investigations continue.
