Former President of Ghana and African Union (AU) Champion for Reparatory Justice, John Dramani Mahama, has called on African nations to confront and heal from the continent's historical traumas as a necessary step toward unlocking its full potential.
Speaking on the occasion of Africa Day 2025, Mahama delivered a powerful message of unity, justice, and hope for Africans and people of African descent across the globe.
“Happy Africa Day!
Let us work together to build a future where justice prevails, the wounds of the past are healed, and the potential of every African and person of African descent is fully realized.
Let Africa Day 2025 be a turning point. Let us move forward, united in purpose, towards a just and equitable future.”
Reaffirming his commitment to reparatory justice, Mahama highlighted the African Union’s declaration of 2025 as the “Year for Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.”
“As the AU Champion for this critical cause, I am deeply committed to working with you all to achieve this objective,” he stated.
Mahama's address emphasizes a broader continental effort to address historical injustices—including colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade—through systemic reforms and reparations. His leadership aligns with the AU's vision for a more equitable and unified Africa, driven by accountability, redress, and empowerment.
