ASEM ABA: UTAG-UEW Demands Justice After Murder of Professor Amedeker, Urges Improved Campus Security
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Education, Winneba (UEW) chapter, is calling for a full-scale investigation into the gruesome murder of Professor Mawuadem Koku Amedeker. His body was discovered buried at his residence in Gyahadze, a suburb of Winneba, following several weeks of being reported missing. The remains were exhumed on May 22, 2025, under deeply troubling circumstances that have sent shockwaves throughout the academic and national community.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 25, UTAG-UEW described the incident as a profound loss to both the university and Ghana’s educational sector. The association honored Professor Amedeker as a distinguished academic and a devoted teacher, expressing heartfelt condolences to his family, students, and colleagues.
“UTAG-UEW extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, students, colleagues, and the entire UEW community during this difficult time. We mourn with them and share in their grief,” the statement read.
The association commended the Ghana Police Service for the swift launch of an investigation and the arrest of a suspect, while urging authorities to intensify efforts to identify and prosecute all those involved in the crime.
UTAG-UEW also acknowledged the support of the national UTAG body during this period of mourning and reflection.
In addition to calls for justice, the association is appealing to government, university managements, and security agencies to strengthen safety measures across all academic institutions in the country. They emphasized that such tragedies highlight the urgent need for enhanced protection of faculty and staff.
UTAG-UEW pledged to honor the memory and legacy of Professor Amedeker by upholding the academic values he stood for throughout his career.
The murder has reignited national discussions on campus safety and the need for comprehensive reforms to protect the academic community.
