President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to implementing enduring reforms and delivering principled leadership aimed at transforming Ghana’s governance and economic landscape.
Speaking to members of the clergy on Friday, May 23, President Mahama emphasized his vision for lasting change that future governments will be compelled to uphold.
“With effective leadership, we can turn this economy around and improve the quality of life for all Ghanaians. That is the commitment I bring to the table,” he declared.
He outlined a plan for deep, long-term reforms that would elevate governance standards and restore public confidence in Ghana’s democracy. “By the end of our four-year term, we aim to set a benchmark so high that no matter which party comes to power, the progress—especially in rebuilding democratic trust—cannot be reversed,” Mahama said.
The President also addressed recent comments from former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who questioned the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) role in the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi. Speaking at the Young Executive Forum (YEF) in London, Dr. Bawumia attributed the currency’s gains to legacy initiatives, such as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) gold purchase programme, and challenged the NDC to identify a single impactful policy.
In response, Mahama dismissed the idea that one policy alone could explain the currency’s improvement, highlighting instead the broader importance of leadership.
“Someone asked me to name one policy responsible for the cedi’s appreciation. I said—just one? It’s not about a single policy. It’s about effective and comprehensive leadership,” he responded.
The President’s remarks signal his intention to build a governance legacy that withstands political transitions and continues to serve the interests of Ghanaians for generations to come.
