Godfred Dame Defends Judiciary Against Politically Motivated Criticism

Former Attorney-General Godfred Dame has strongly refuted recent criticisms from fellow legal practitioner Thaddeus Sory, describing them as politically motivated attacks that threaten the independence of Ghana’s judiciary.

In a public response, Dame claimed that the accusations against him are part of a broader campaign orchestrated by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to undermine his credibility. He defended his legal record, pointing to a history of winning significant cases during and outside his tenure as Attorney-General.

“With all humility, I reference the strength of Ghana’s judiciary through the consistent success I achieved in landmark cases between 2003 and 2007 as a junior lawyer, and again from 2009 to 2017 while in opposition,” Dame stated. “This independence is now under attack, and I remain steadfast in my commitment to defend it.”

Responding to allegations involving a plot to remove the Chief Justice, Dame raised ethical concerns over Sory’s dual legal roles. He highlighted a potential conflict of interest, given Sory’s current representation of both the Speaker of Parliament and an individual challenging the Chief Justice.

“I’ve never denied your past work for clients associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly during your time under Mr. Ambrose Dery,” Dame said. “However, in your current roles, there’s a serious ethical issue. If you can’t recognize the conflict in seeking the Chief Justice’s removal under these circumstances, I don’t know what will convince you.”

Addressing Sory’s assertion of a lawyer’s right to represent any client, Dame agreed but noted that the same principle applies to all legal practitioners, including himself.

Dame concluded by stating that he would not continue engaging on the issue, suggesting that the intensity of the opposition’s reaction reflects his continued influence.

“This is the last I will say on the matter. I will not respond to further provocations, although I suspect your fixation on me will persist,” he said. “As the saying goes, ‘When Godfred Dame coughs, the entire NDC catches a cold.’”

Ken Ofori-Atta Files Legal Action Against Special Prosecutor Over 'Wanted Person' Label

Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has taken legal action against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), seeking an injunction to prevent the agency from continuing to label him as a “wanted person” or “fugitive from justice.” This legal move comes after Ofori-Atta's image and personal details were publicly displayed on the OSP's official social media pages, despite earlier assurances made in a letter dated February 18, 2025. In a motion filed by his legal team, Ofori-Atta argues that the OSP's actions violate the principles of administrative justice, specifically the right to a fair process and the protection of his personal dignity.
