The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has reaffirmed that the city’s decongestion drive is a permanent measure aimed at restoring order to the Central Business District (CBD). Speaking to the media on Tuesday, May 20, following the official launch of the initiative, he emphasized that the campaign is not a short-term fix.
According to Mayor Allotey, the effort forms part of a broader urban development plan focused on removing unauthorized structures, clearing street obstructions, and reclaiming public spaces. The goal is to ease traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety in the capital.
The operation is being carried out by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in partnership with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA). It supports wider city management objectives, such as enforcing by-laws, improving sanitation, and enhancing overall urban living conditions.
In its initial phase, the campaign has targeted major congestion hotspots including the stretch from Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka—areas known for heavy street vending and traffic jams.
City authorities stress that this move reflects a permanent policy shift focused on creating a safer, cleaner, and more orderly environment for residents and visitors alike.
