A confrontation broke out on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, between a trader and police officers during an Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) decongestion operation at the Neoplan Station in Circle, Accra.
According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began when the trader resisted eviction from an unauthorized trading spot. The situation escalated into a brief scuffle before police personnel intervened to defuse tensions and restore order.
This incident underscores the difficulties city authorities face in enforcing urban by-laws and maintaining discipline in heavily congested commercial areas.
Operation Overview
The decongestion exercise, which started on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, is a joint effort between the AMA and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA). The initiative is aimed at reducing congestion, upholding city regulations, and improving sanitation within central Accra.
Key target areas include the surroundings of the AMA Head Office—stretching from Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and from Opera Square to Adabraka. These zones are well known for illegal street vending and blocked pedestrian walkways.
Accra Mayor Michael Allotey reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to the campaign, declaring that enforcement would be ongoing.
“This is not a one-off event. We will remain on the streets until the roads are clear,” he asserted.
In a policy shift, Mayor Allotey announced that items seized during the operations would no longer be auctioned but instead donated to the Ghana Prisons Service.
“I’ll personally deliver the confiscated goods to the prison tomorrow. Consider today your lucky day,” he warned traders who fail to comply.
The AMA continues to call for public support and trader cooperation to ensure a cleaner, safer, and more accessible city.
