A 23-year-old cashier, Andy Tetteh, has been sentenced to three months in prison with hard labour by the Kaneshie District Court One after admitting to stealing GH¢8,575 from his employer and using it to place sports bets—all of which he lost.
Tetteh was employed by Bingo Bets, a betting firm located at Ecomog, Adabraka, where he worked as a cashier. According to Chief Inspector Achana Apewah, the theft occurred on April 30, 2025, when Tetteh collected bets from customers but failed to remit the funds.
Mr. Teye Simon Kwabla, the manager of Bingo Bets, reported the incident to the police when the cashier could not account for the money. Upon investigation, authorities discovered that Tetteh had used the full amount to gamble, hoping for a win that never came.
Tetteh was arrested, charged with theft, and promptly confessed in court. The presiding judge convicted him based on his plea and imposed the three-month sentence with hard labour.
This incident brings renewed attention to the growing issue of gambling-related financial crimes, especially among young adults who fall into the trap of high-risk betting behavior.
