Deputy National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Osman Ayariga, has called on the youth of Akwatia to remain peaceful and avoid being used as agents of violence in the upcoming by-election.
Speaking to a gathering of young people in the constituency, Mr. Ayariga emphasized that the electoral process should be peaceful and transparent. He reassured the community that the presence of security forces was solely to maintain law and order and protect all voters.
"Do not be alarmed by the police presence—they are here to ensure your safety," he said. "Go about your normal activities without fear, but under no circumstance should you allow yourselves to be used to foment violence. Let’s choose peace, because in peace, the NDC will emerge victorious in the Akwatia by-election."
Mr. Ayariga further urged voters to support the NDC candidate, stressing that having a Member of Parliament from the ruling party could facilitate the development of the constituency through easier access to government support and resources.
The by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, will see a closely watched contest between Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernard Bediako of the NDC. Akwatia, known as a swing constituency, has drawn national attention due to its potential to influence the broader political landscape.
In preparation for the election, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 600 personnel to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process. These officers, some of whom have undergone a recent five-day intensive training program, will be stationed across the constituency before, during, and after the polls to uphold law and order.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the election and urged all stakeholders, particularly the youth, to prioritize peace and democracy.
