The quiet community of Kongo in the Tempane District of Ghana’s Upper East Region was left reeling after a violent attack by unidentified individuals. The incident, which occurred on August 2, resulted in serious injuries, the destruction of homes, and the loss of livestock and other property.
According to Mr. Sulemana Abdulai, a local elder and relative of one of the victims, the attack was sudden and unprovoked. He recounted that the assailants entered the village, firing weapons indiscriminately and threatening residents.
“I have urged my people not to retaliate, though I face criticism for this stance,” Mr. Abdulai said. “We expected a swift response from the police, but progress has been slow. Some of the injured had to be transferred from Bolgatanga Hospital to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for specialized care.”
Kongo lies near Ghana’s borders with Burkina Faso and Togo and is home to three major ethnic groups: the Bimobas, Mossi, and Fulbes (Fulani).
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kwadwo Adu, the Garu District Police Commander, confirmed the incident had been officially reported. He noted that arrests had been made and investigations were underway. ASP Adu reassured the public that police would maintain their presence in the area and warned against any retaliatory actions.
Mr. Kakani Fatawu, the Assemblyman for Kongo, called the attack a tragic event and said it was rooted in a long-standing land dispute, which is currently being addressed in the Bolgatanga High Court.
“I’ve been working with both sides to promote dialogue and discourage violence,” he stated. “This community has a long history of coexistence, and it's painful to witness such division.”
Mr. Fatawu also appealed to the Ghana Armed Forces and Police Service to intensify patrols and consider disarmament measures to prevent future clashes.
“This region has seen enough unrest,” he added. “We must not allow another crisis to unfold.”
As investigations continue, the Kongo community is left grappling with the aftermath and calling for stronger government intervention to ensure safety and justice.
