The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced that all first-year students entering Senior High Schools (SHS) nationwide are to report to school on Saturday, October 18, 2025, marking the start of the 2025/2026 academic year.
This directive was communicated through a circular issued to all Regional Directors of Education. According to the GES, the directive applies to both Single Track and Transitional schools.
The circular, signed by Mr. Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, includes a comprehensive academic calendar outlining key term dates, public holidays, and specific guidelines to ensure a smooth academic year.
Regional Directors have been instructed to distribute the calendar to all heads of second-cycle institutions within their jurisdictions. Heads of schools are expected to strictly adhere to the schedule to ensure nationwide uniformity in the academic programme.
“The Service counts on your usual cooperation to ensure effective teaching and learning in our institutions for the 2025/2026 academic year,” the GES stated in the communication.
The notice has also been copied to relevant stakeholders, including the GES Council, the Director-General of TVET, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), and the Free SHS Secretariat at the Ministry of Education.
This move by the GES aims to streamline preparations ahead of the academic year and reinforce consistency in the educational system across the country.
