The Kusaug Traditional Council has accused Seidu Abagre, leader of the Mamprusi community in Bawku, of undermining the ongoing peace efforts in the region through actions deemed "impulsive and provocative." During an emergency meeting held on Friday, August 29, 2025, the council raised concerns over Abagre’s behavior, which they argue poses a serious threat to the fragile peace process.
The council contends that Seidu Abagre, who they described as “illegally enskinned,” has been attempting to appoint new chiefs, including the Kpalore Naba and Nakyi Naba, with further plans for additional enskinments. These moves, the council claims, are intended to consolidate his influence and gather support for the controversial Damba Festival in Bawku. The Kusaug Traditional Council argues that these appointments undermine the ongoing mediation efforts of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and risk derailing the peace process he is working to conclude.
In their statement, the Kusaug Council expressed deep frustration with both the previous and current governments, accusing them of inaction despite recognizing Abagre's leadership as illegal. They further criticized the government's failure to either arrest or remove him from Bawku.
The Kusaug Traditional Council issued three key demands in response to the escalating tensions:
- The immediate arrest, prosecution, and removal of Seidu Abagre from Bawku.
- The cessation of security escorts for Mamprusi individuals and goods traveling to and from Bawku.
- A suspension of the Damba Festival in Bawku unless it is organized under the authority of the legitimate Bawku Paramount Chief.
The council emphasized that their patience should not be misinterpreted as weakness and urged government and security agencies to take firm action to prevent further violence in the region. They warned that continued impunity and lawlessness could lead to more bloodshed if left unaddressed.
In closing, the statement, signed by Gumbo Naba Alhaji Mohamudu Assibi Azonko II, made it clear that the Kusaug people could no longer endure the current instability, stressing that urgent action is needed to prevent further conflict in Bawku.
