Chelsea Football Club has sanctioned the transfers of Carney Chukwuemeka and Aaron Anselmino to Borussia Dortmund, pushing the club’s total player sales for the summer transfer window beyond the £270 million mark.
Chukwuemeka, 21, is set to join Dortmund on a permanent basis in a deal valued at up to £24 million. The agreement includes a substantial sell-on clause. Despite interest from RB Leipzig, the England Under-20 international was determined to return to the Westfalenstadion after a successful loan spell during the second half of last season. He is currently finalizing personal terms with the German club.
This transfer brings Chelsea’s total revenue from player sales this summer to £273.4 million—more than any other Premier League club. The figure nearly offsets the club’s £277 million expenditure on new signings during the same window.
UEFA has mandated that Chelsea must achieve a positive net transfer balance this summer in order to register new players for the UEFA Champions League. This requirement follows a £26.7 million fine imposed on the club for breaching financial regulations, including surpassing the 80% wage-to-income ratio.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Argentine defender Aaron Anselmino will also join Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan. The deal does not include a purchase option. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca supports the move, believing the loan is essential for Anselmino’s development, given the intense competition for defensive roles at Stamford Bridge. Dortmund pursued the loan to provide cover for injured defenders Niklas Süle, Emre Can, and Nico Schlotterbeck.
Chukwuemeka joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022 for £20 million and has made 32 appearances for the club. Anselmino, signed from Boca Juniors in January for £15.6 million, featured only once—coming off the bench at the FIFA Club World Cup.
With nine days remaining in the transfer window, Chelsea is expected to remain active in the market. The club has expressed interest in Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons.
Several departures are also anticipated. Forwards Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, and Tyrique George are among those linked with exits. Additionally, up to nine more players could be sold, including members of the so-called “bomb squad.” The futures of Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, and Axel Disasi remain uncertain as Chelsea looks to finalize its squad for the upcoming season.
