The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) is scheduled to begin drilling activities in the Voltain Basin by the first quarter of 2026, according to the Acting CEO of the Petroleum Commission, Victoria Emeafa Hardcastle.
Announcing the development during a working visit to Zeal Environmental Technologies in the Shama District of the Western Region, Madam Hardcastle said the move is part of Ghana’s broader strategy to expand its petroleum resource base and strengthen its appeal to global investors.
She stated that the Petroleum Commission is actively supporting GNPC’s preparations for the drilling campaign while repositioning Ghana as a competitive destination for major players in the global oil and gas sector.
Highlighting the critical role of local industry, she encouraged indigenous service providers—such as Zeal—to scale up their capacity in anticipation of opportunities arising from the Voltain Basin project. “We must ensure that Ghanaians derive maximum value from these operations by strengthening local participation in the petroleum value chain,” she said.
The Petroleum Commission, established under Act 821 in 2011, is tasked with regulating Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector and coordinating policy implementation. The visit to Zeal Environmental Technologies was part of the Commission’s efforts to deepen collaboration with local service providers, especially those involved in petroleum waste management.
Zeal’s Founder and Board Chairman, Kwaku Ennin, welcomed the engagement and urged the government to implement policies that make Ghana’s oil and gas industry more attractive to investors. He also pledged the company's readiness to support GNPC’s upcoming operations in the Voltain Basin.
The Voltain Basin, located in Ghana’s inland sedimentary zone, has long been identified as a promising but untapped frontier in the country’s hydrocarbon exploration efforts.
