Dr. Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, has praised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s capabilities but suggested that Kennedy Agyapong may offer the New Patriotic Party (NPP) a stronger path to victory in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on August 26, Dr. Amoah acknowledged Dr. Bawumia’s significant role in Ghana’s economic recovery, particularly in his leadership of the Economic Management Team under President Akufo-Addo. He credited the current administration with recent improvements in the country's economic indicators.
Despite Bawumia’s credentials, Dr. Amoah emphasized that winning elections in Ghana requires more than strong governance. He pointed to other influential factors, such as regional voting patterns and the prevailing political climate.
“I have never questioned Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s competence—far from it,” Dr. Amoah stated. “My concern is about the NPP’s chances in 2028. In Ghana, electoral success isn’t solely based on performance. Voting behavior is heavily influenced by geography and other political dynamics.”
Based on his observations, Dr. Amoah argued that Kennedy Agyapong could be a more strategic choice for the party heading into the next election cycle.
“I believe our chances of winning improve with Kennedy Agyapong as our candidate. It’s not about comparing competence but about who is better positioned to win considering all the variables at play,” he added.
Dr. Amoah’s remarks reflect the ongoing strategic conversations within the NPP as it looks to define its leadership and electoral approach ahead of 2028.
