Tensions Flare as NPP Supporters Confront Asiedu Nketiah at Ernest Kumi’s 40-Day Memorial

A solemn remembrance event for the late former MP for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, nearly descended into chaos when the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, arrived at the Wenchi Durbar Grounds to pay his respects.

Asiedu Nketiah and his entourage were met with hostility from a group of visibly upset New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters, including women, who reportedly attempted to physically confront him. His security team and accompanying NDC members swiftly intervened to shield him from the aggression. Reinforcements from the Ghana Police Service arrived shortly after to restore order.

The situation was eventually defused through the efforts of high-ranking NPP figures, including:

Their intervention allowed Asiedu Nketiah to proceed to where former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia were seated to offer his condolences.

In response to the incident, NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande called it a disturbing sign, especially in a political climate where leaders are advocating for peace:

“It’s troubling that such aggression occurred at a funeral. We’ve taken note, and it will inform how we engage with the NPP going forward,” he told Channel One News.

Background

The 40-day observance is a traditional milestone in Ghanaian culture to honour the memory of the deceased. Ernest Kumi, a respected statesman and former Member of Parliament, was being commemorated by family, political figures, and constituents alike.

Ken Ofori-Atta Files Legal Action Against Special Prosecutor Over 'Wanted Person' Label

Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has taken legal action against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), seeking an injunction to prevent the agency from continuing to label him as a “wanted person” or “fugitive from justice.” This legal move comes after Ofori-Atta's image and personal details were publicly displayed on the OSP's official social media pages, despite earlier assurances made in a letter dated February 18, 2025. In a motion filed by his legal team, Ofori-Atta argues that the OSP's actions violate the principles of administrative justice, specifically the right to a fair process and the protection of his personal dignity. Additionally, Ofori-Atta seeks an interlocutory injunction to stop the OSP from issuing any further press releases or public statements that ...
