Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has defended his decision to engage with Ralph Saint Williams, also known as “Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian”, the main suspect in the recent assault case at Ridge Hospital.
Appearing on TV3’s Hot Issues, the Minister recounted how the unexpected encounter unfolded during his visit to the hospital following reports of the incident involving a staff member.
“I noticed a man arriving in a black saloon car. He didn’t park properly, and my directors pointed him out as the person involved in the incident,” Akandoh said. “He came over, offered a handshake, and tried to whisper something to me.”
According to Akandoh, Williams asked for a private meeting.
“He told me, ‘Mr. Minister, I won’t speak here. I’ll come to your office and explain my side,’” the Minister recalled.
Williams reportedly had initially intended to go to the Ministry to file a complaint but diverted to Ridge Hospital after hearing the Minister was there. The Minister later received him in his office for a private discussion.
Despite some public criticism, Akandoh stood by his actions.
“I don’t regret speaking with him. My only regret is not refusing the handshake. But I don’t believe in being rude to any Ghanaian, regardless of their legal situation—even if they are convicted or facing a death sentence,” he stated.
Akandoh also pointed out that the matter has two dimensions: one that concerns the Ministry’s oversight and another that falls within the scope of criminal justice and must be addressed by the police.
Addressing concerns over the lack of video evidence in the assault case, the Minister stressed his ongoing commitment to healthcare worker safety.
“Ensuring the safety and well-being of our health professionals remains a top priority for the Ministry,” he affirmed.
