The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly has issued a firm directive to traders at the Redco slum in Madina, warning them to cease all rebuilding activities in the area, which has been officially declared a security zone following a series of devastating fires.
Despite the ban, several traders have reportedly begun reconstructing their shops after the most recent blaze ravaged the settlement. These traders are now appealing to the government to expedite investigations and lift the restriction so they can resume their businesses and support their families.
However, the Assembly has made it clear that any individuals found violating the directive by rebuilding in the area will face arrest and prosecution.
Some affected traders are calling on authorities to not only enforce the security zone designation but also to introduce regulations that will ensure safe, structured, and lawful commercial activity in the future. They have expressed growing concerns over disorganization and illegal occupation of trading spaces.
“We lost everything, and no one came to help us,” said one distressed trader. “Now others are trying to take over our original spots. If we’re going to rebuild, we need to return to the places we were operating from.”
Another trader shared a troubling incident: “Someone brought in a 40-foot container and claimed the land belonged to his mother. We reported it to the Assembly, and although they promised to remove it, it’s still here.”
The traders are urging the government to intervene swiftly to safeguard their rights, restore order, and provide guidance on how they can resume their businesses within legal and safe parameters.
