Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, has attributed the recent helicopter crash that claimed eight lives to the inexperience of the pilot and the alleged mismanagement of Ghana's aviation sector under former President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking in an interview with Lawyer OB on Asempa Radio, the former Vice Presidential candidate asserted that Squadron Leader Peter Anala, the pilot at the center of the tragic crash, lacked the necessary experience to handle such a critical mission. According to Napo, his understanding of the situation points to a serious lapse in aviation leadership and pilot deployment during the Mahama administration.
Napo further claimed that prior to President Mahama’s tenure, Ghana boasted a number of highly experienced military pilots. However, he alleged that upon assuming office, President Mahama sidelined these seasoned professionals for reasons known only to him.
He also mentioned that Squadron Leader Anala had expressed concerns about the mission prior to the incident, implying that the pilot himself felt underprepared for the task ahead.
Using a metaphor, Napo added, “It is only when the leg of a billy goat is broken that it remembers its way back home,” suggesting that the crisis is a painful reminder of earlier warnings that went unheeded.
He cautioned that public praise for Peter Anala’s service should not be mistaken for professional competence, stating that acclaim alone is not a measure of experience.
The helicopter crash, which left the nation in mourning, has reignited public discourse around aviation safety and leadership accountability within the military and government sectors.
