Leading figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered at Akyem Wenchi to observe the one-week memorial of the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi.
Among the high-profile attendees were former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Also present were several senior parliamentary leaders and national executives of the party.
The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, led the parliamentary delegation, which included:
- Henry Quartey, former Greater Accra Regional Minister
- Patrick Boamah, MP for Okaikwei Central
- Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, MP for Ofoase Ayirebi
- Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, MP for New Juaben South
- Abena Osei Asare, MP for Atewa East

Additionally, the NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, and National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha were all in attendance.
Reports indicate that other senior party members, including Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, are also expected to be present at the memorial.
The late Ernest Kumi passed away just six months after the 2024 general elections. His term in Parliament began following a prolonged legal battle, ultimately resolved in his favor by the Supreme Court.
Following his passing, a by-election is scheduled for September 2, 2025, to fill the vacant Akwatia parliamentary seat. According to recent polling by Global InfoAnalytics, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is currently favored to win the seat, with strong support reported among tertiary and senior high school students and communities calling for increased development.
