Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas have dismissed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from his role as head coach, less than an hour after the team’s elimination from the UEFA Europa Conference League.
The former Manchester United manager, who took over at Besiktas in January 2025, led the team to a fourth-place finish in the Turkish league last season. However, the club's failure to qualify for European competition this term proved costly.
Besiktas suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Swiss side Lausanne, resulting in a 2-1 aggregate loss in the final qualifying round for the Europa Conference League. Lausanne is owned by INEOS, a group with ties to Manchester United.
In an official statement released shortly after the match, the Besiktas board announced Solskjaer's departure:
“After getting knocked out of the UEFA Conference League tonight, the Besiktas Board of Directors held an emergency meeting and decided to part ways with Head Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Board also thanked Mr. Solskjaer for his services to Besiktas and wished him luck in his future career.”
This was Solskjaer’s first managerial role since being relieved of his duties at Manchester United two seasons ago. Despite a promising start at Besiktas, his tenure has now come to an abrupt end.
As of now, Besiktas sit eighth in the 18-team Turkish Super Lig, with one win from their only league fixture this season.
