Five individuals, including the Chief of Kalba, have been confirmed dead, and six others critically injured, following a violent gun battle stemming from a land dispute in Gbenyiri, a community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region.
According to information from local sources and the Savannah Regional Police Command, the clash broke out between two rival factions, both claiming ownership of a disputed piece of land. The confrontation, which took place on Saturday night, quickly escalated into an armed conflict, leaving the area in a state of fear and unrest.
Eyewitnesses in Tuna reported that the injured were transported to the district hospital for emergency medical care.
Amid the unrest, the Chief of Gbenyiri was forced to flee his palace and seek refuge at the residence of the Kalba Chief. In an attempt to restore calm, the Kalba Chief reportedly instructed his son the following morning to escort the Gbenyiri Chief back to his palace. However, the group was ambushed en route by unidentified armed individuals, believed to be associated with one of the feuding factions. Both the Kalba Chief and his son were killed during the attack.
In response, the Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has deployed a high-level security team, including the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Awowolo, to Kalba and Gbenyiri to restore order and safeguard lives and property.
As of now, no arrests have been made. The situation remains highly volatile as investigations continue.
