Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia—popularly known as "General Mosquito"—has publicly refuted claims suggesting he intends to contest for the party’s flagbearer position in the next general election.
In an exclusive interview with Channel 1 Media, Asiedu Nketia addressed the growing speculation about his potential presidential aspirations, emphasizing that such discussions are premature and potentially harmful to the current administration led by President John Dramani Mahama.
“President Mahama has been in office for only eight months. It is far too early for anyone within the party to be discussing succession plans,” he stated.
Asiedu Nketia warned that early political ambition could distract party officials from their responsibilities, risking the progress of the NDC government. He stressed that those speculating about his interest in the presidency are doing so without his endorsement.
“I have followed the discourse surrounding who might contest for the presidency on the NDC ticket. While ambition is not inherently bad, I continue to caution that we must be careful with how we express it,” he explained.
He further elaborated that any attempt to push personal political agendas at this stage would undermine the party’s unity and the effectiveness of President Mahama’s leadership.
“Whoever eventually succeeds President Mahama will rely heavily on the success of this administration. If our internal actions hinder the current government, it creates a much harder path for the next flagbearer to gain public trust,” he added.
Highlighting the potential consequences, Asiedu Nketia pointed out that high-ranking officials—such as ministers, party chairpersons, and even the Chief of Staff—have been named in succession discussions. He cautioned that if those in such key roles begin organizing nationwide campaigns prematurely, it would compromise the government’s capacity to deliver.
“If everyone currently in leadership starts forming campaign teams and traveling the country, how can President Mahama focus on his agenda? If a minister becomes consumed by presidential ambition, their decisions will be guided by that goal—not the interest of the nation,” he noted.
The NDC Chairman emphasized the need for loyalty, discipline, and a united front to ensure the success of the current administration. He concluded by urging party members and stakeholders to support President Mahama fully before entertaining discussions about future leadership.
“If we destabilize the government in its early stages, we give the Ghanaian people no reason to vote for us in the future,” he warned.
Asiedu Nketia’s remarks appear to be a strong message to both his supporters and fellow party executives: political ambition must not take precedence over national service and party solidarity.
