The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued an immediate recall for Grand Chateaux Sangria Forte, specifically targeting the Tetra Pak (250ml) and Canned (330ml Pétillante) variants, which have been found on the Ghanaian market and advertised on social media platforms.
The FDA's decision to recall these products stems from several concerns:
-
Illegal Importation and Distribution: The importer of these products is in violation of Sections 97, 98, and 103 of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), as the products are not registered with the FDA. This makes the sale and distribution of these items unlawful.
-
Unregistered Status: These products have not been approved by the FDA and therefore lack the necessary regulatory approval for sale.
-
Misleading Packaging: The product packaging and sizing are considered deceptive, potentially leading to accidental alcohol consumption, particularly by children, posing significant health risks.
In light of these concerns, the FDA has instructed the following actions:
- Consumers are advised to avoid purchasing or consuming these unregistered products.
- Retailers and wholesalers are required to immediately cease the sale and distribution of the products.
- Any remaining stock should be returned to the nearest Cave and Garden Ghana Limited outlets or FDA offices nationwide.
- The importer has been sanctioned, and regulatory actions are underway to ensure compliance with safety standards.
The FDA remains committed to protecting public health and safety and encourages the public to report any information related to the sale of these products. Reports can be made through the FDA’s official communication channels: the website (www.fdaghana.gov.gh), phone lines (0551112224/5), or email (fda@fda.gov.gh).
The FDA’s Chief Executive Officer reassured the public that these measures are in place to prevent potential harm and ensure adherence to health and safety regulations throughout the country.
