Manhyia North Member of Parliament, Akwasi Konadu, has clarified the Minority’s position on Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which seeks to revoke permits for mining in forest reserves. His comments come after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority called for the LI to undergo a pre-laying process before being formally introduced in Parliament.
LI 2462, officially known as the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations 2022, currently permits mining in forest reserves when deemed in the national interest.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Tuesday, March 18, Konadu explained that while the Minority is not opposed to revoking the regulation, it is advocating for proper parliamentary procedures to be followed.
“The Minority is not against the LI, or the revocation of portions of the LI that grant individuals the right to mine in forest reserves. What the Minority is seeking is that the processes for passing an LI be adhered to,” Konadu stated.
The proposed LI has sparked ongoing debate in Parliament, with the Majority pushing for its swift passage, while the Minority emphasizes the importance of following correct procedural steps to ensure transparency and accountability.
